twilight. the sky overhead was stained a faint pink, sun hanging low over the horizon. beside the steady murmur of the rivers surrounding camp, things were quiet. a peaceful summer evening, a time to gather together and exchange tales of the day's events, and rest after the stifling heat of the day. seasons ago, such a scene might have bored cardinalstar out of her pelt. now, though, she appreciated the peace of mind that came with knowing her clanmates were full and satisfied, with little need to be wary of threats to the clan.
in the shade of her den, cardinalstar alternated between looking out onto the camp and grooming her tortoiseshell fur. she took her time, knowing that as soon as the first few stars winked into existence overhead she would be making an important announcement to riverclan. it wouldn't do to look ruffled at an event such as this after all. a few more licks and the she-cat felt presentable enough to step from the leader's den, nodding ever so slightly to the cats who greeted her as she padded across the camp. her course took her to a sun-weathered log; the post from which cardinalstar liked to make her announcements. muscles bunching, she leapt atop the perch with practiced ease, turning to face the center of camp. already some cats had grouped up near the log anticipating the call for a meeting before she could even meow. well, that was to be expected, she supposed with a twitch of her whiskers, this had been a highly anticipated announcement. it wasn't every day that a new deputy was announced after all. cardinalstar cleared her throat. "let all cats old enough to swim gather here for a clan meeting!" she mewed, voice carrying easily in the stillness of dusk.

"let all cats old enough to swim gather here for a clan meeting!"
sootpaw had anticipated the call. without so much as a pause to yawn, the dark-pelted apprentice rose from their nest and padded for the clan's meeting place. training today had finished some time ago, as nightscreech had taken the both of them out fairly early on in the day; even still, sootpaw had known better than to go to sleep. the sleek black cat moved wordlessly to join riverclan where they had begun to gather, gaze shifting just a bit as they tried to pick out their mentor in the growing crowd. unable to discern where nightscreech was, nor any of her kits, sootpaw resolved instead to sit off to the outskirts of the group, by themselves as they often were though ears still pricked and stance attentive for what was to come.
of course, it was apparent just what that was. with the recent vacation of the spot, it was clear to anyone even the tiniest bit aware of the world around them that riverclan was in need of a new deputy before moonhigh - though a little less clear was just who was the most likely candidate for the job. obviously, sootpaw's own parents could not expect to be given the position; much as the two of them liked to think themselves respected, important even, even their kit knew well enough that beefur and mousestorm were about as significant as stripes on a fish. pretty or pleasant to look at, maybe, but unhelpful in the long run when it came to escaping the skillful paws of their riverclan predators. as it were, neither of them could really have hoped for the spot at all - though sootpaw would not put it past the both of them to have done so anyway. they had always been rather full of themselves, hadn't they? (part of why sootpaw had not chosen to seek out their company for this meeting. the other part, of course, was simply the apprentice's predisposition for solitude in the first place.)
well. musings aside, sootpaw knew they should focus on the meeting now and not their own introspection. pushing their thoughts to the wayside for the time being, they forced themselves to sit up a little taller, moving their tail to wrap it delicately around their front paws in a motion meant to help them keep totally still and alert in appearance. it would not do to fidget during a meeting as significant as this. composure was, of course, very important.

it was tempting to outright ignore cardinalstar's call for a clan meeting. palepaw had spent the better part of the day in the elder's den. clearing out old moss, fetching fresh supplies from the forest to make new nests, and, inevitably, having to remove fleas and ticks from the elders' pelts had drained the lynx-point tom. honestly, he just wanted to return to the reed-woven shelter that formed the apprentice den and sleep until his mentor called on him when the sun rose. still, the tom wrinkled his nose as he weighed his options, attending to the elders all day had been a punishment for a prank the other day. if he failed to show up to a clan meeting and his mentor noticed he'd probably just rack up another day of elder caring duty. he really didn't want to be stuck with smelly mouse bile for two days in a row.
stretching his jaws in a silent yawn, palepaw made his way towards where other riverclan cats had begun to gather at cardinalstar's summons. this was the sort of meeting one didn't want to miss, after all, the apprentice told himself. how embarrassing would it be if he was the only cat in camp who didn't know who the new deputy was? he shuddered, pelt ruffling at the thought. sleep could definitely wait until after the meeting.
he sought out a fairly unoccupied space, not wanting to sit in the middle of a large group of cats when excitement over the new deputy broke out. he opted to sit by another apprentice instead, sootpaw, and nodded politely to the other cat before plopping down on the ground and stifling another yawn. he was here, at least, now if only their leader could hurry up and get on with her big announcement.

Nightscreech had been weaving through the camp, simply watching over her Clan-mates. The she-cat was quiet, thoughts were kept to herself as she stifled her own feelings of curiosity. Which of these warriors--the cats she had grown up with and seen grow up--would become the Clan's new deputy? Her green gaze drifted from pelt to pelt, imagining the roles of young and old as they stepped into their new position. She shook her head after a moment, chastising herself. Be patient, whoever the new deputy was she would serve them with as much loyalty as the last.
Still, this was a rarity in itself. There was some curiosity--excitement to be allowed--when faced with a decision like a new deputy. This cat would shape the future of RiverClan at Cardinalstar's side, would be her trusted deputy in times to come. This cat would serve as a compass of morale and strength, would organize patrols and rally the warriors of the Clan. It was an important decision, one that would shape RiverClan for moons to come. StarClan willing, that is.
Nightscreech tried to find her kits before the meeting--she wanted to see how they were. Of course, she'd attempted to search at an inconvenient time, because she spotted Cardinalstar slipping out of her den. Nightscreech trotted forward a few paces, as though this would somehow help her find her children, but slowed to a reluctant stop at Cardinalstar's words. She could find her kits after the meeting.
It was time now.
The black she-cat's head lifted, nose tilting toward Cardinalstar. Her ears twitched, and she swerved carefully from her meandering path into a more purposeful one. Seating herself carefully where she could watch her Clan-mates, the she-cat was almost in the back of the crowd. Her tail curled over her paws, and she gazed over the sea of pelts--Sootpaw and Palepaw were off together, and the she-cat was tempted to encourage her apprentice to try and mingle. Let them be, don't nitpick you'll merely cause undue stress.
Besides, she thought with a small purr, You're not sitting with everyone either. But she liked to see the reactions on the faces of her clan-mates, enjoyed the thought of spotting the new deputy and yowling their name with pride. Whoever it was, she would be proud. The she-cat tilted her nose up toward Cardinalstar, and breathed a soft sigh of relief.
Whatever happened, RiverClan would be strong.
