WE ALL HAVE FORESTS ON OUR MINDS.
FORESTS UNEXPLORED, UNENDING.
EACH OF US GETS LOST IN THE FOREST, EVERY NIGHT, ALONE.
Peering around inquiringly at her surroundings, Amberwhisker wandered through the overgrown forest that SkyClan called home. Wiry and dry from baking in the Greenleaf sun, the moss crumpled beneath her broad white paws, only to spring back to life as soon as she continued forward. The light of the late afternoon spilled down from the canopy, giving the forest a golden, almost otherworldly glow. It caught in her pelt, the patches of red fur gleaming like embers. Pausing abruptly at the base of an oak tree, she sat amongst its roots and drew in a deep breath, holding it for a few seconds before exhaling, and allowing it to phase into the wind.
The young warrior had been itching to abandon camp since morning, to be free to walk the territory and be alone with her thoughts. The air had been suffocating that day, everything was too hot, felt too close. But, to the thick furred she-cat's relief, the heat seemed to have dissipated slightly after sunhigh. And so, earlier that day, she had taken the opportunity to join a border patrol, in an attempt to counteract the guilt that she felt for taking the time for these personal excursions. But in hindsight, perhaps such a task was not the best choice; the very borders they were marking were still under debate by the clans, a fact that only compounded her anxiety.
The deafening buzz of cicadas cut her musings short, the noisy insects overshadowing the birdsong, and finishing off their chorus with a shrill hiss. Their droning rang in her ears, causing her to flick the black tip of her tail irritably. Every time they seemed to have faded away, they picked back up again, chirping away frantically. About to move on to a quieter spot, something darted about in the tree above her, causing her to freeze and turn her gaze upwards. A crow was flitting around in the branches, pecking at one of the cicadas as it flailed about violently to escape.
Of course!
It was during this season that the singing bugs emerged in great numbers, climbing to great heights to start making their annual racket. They would provide a feast for the birds-and if Amberwhisker was lucky-they would prove to be a distraction, too. Stepping lightly, the mottled huntress padded away into a patch of tall grass. Lowering her body to the ground, her leaf colored eyes flashed in anticipation.
