the slender tortoiseshell she-cat padded gingerly along the riverbank, eyes fixed on the silvery surface of the water. there sat two good sized trout on the shore, lined up safely away from the water's edge. she could have settled for just those two. for solo hunting it was a respectable haul after all, but the prospect of calling it quits early and heading back to camp with her current catch rubbed cardinalstar the wrong way. she had more than enough energy to fish some more, after all, so why not put in more effort.
the riverclan leader paused, leaning out over the water to see if there were fish within reach swimming against the current. none here. she frowned. perhaps she'd scared off the other fish in this part of the river with her two earlier catches. they'd return... eventually. but "eventually" wasn't when she was hunting now was it? cardinalstar huffed and twitched her whiskers unhappily. maybe she should return to camp then. she'd be much more useful finding something to do inside of the camp. surely the medicine cat could use some help organising herbs. or perhaps the elders would appreciate some company. anything was better than sitting idly on the riverbank waiting on the off chance that a fish decided to swim by while the waters were so empty.
still, the cat found herself hesitating. she stared at the water, willing some small, flitting sign of aquatic life to cross her green gaze. she'd set her goal on bringing back three fish to camp; to bring back less was going to bother her for the rest of the day. "come now," she muttered at the water, irritated. "there's got to be one more of you fish hiding out there, i'm sure of it." cardinalstar's tailed lashed behind her, her ears lay flat against her head, displeasure plain as day. she really was going to have to call it quits, it appeared, the riverclanner realised with a rush of disappointment. letting out another frustrated sigh, cardinalstar moved to get up, only to freeze as she spotted a small shadowy movement beneath the water. 'aha!' she'd have her third catch of the day after all. lips curling into a smile, cardinalstar readied herself to catch the fish, paw held out for the moment it swam into range.

nightscreech i been waitin' to smile, been holding it in for a while!
The dark-pelted she-cat padded carefully along the river's edge. The sunlight beat down on her fur, and she wondered if it were possible for her to absorb all of it's heat into her body--honestly Nightscreech was considering a swim if only to beat the heat. Her ears twitched, responding to the hum of summer insects and she heaved something like a tired sigh. It wasn't that Nightscreech minded heat all that much, being a RiverClan cat had its perks for such scenarios after all. Even so, the warrior couldn't help but hope that the sun would back off for some rain soon, the cat wrinkled her nose, "It's far too hot for my tastes."
If anything the land was going to need it, right? Her whiskers twitched as she lifted her gaze to the cloudless blue sky. Not a promising puff, she snorted quietly to herself--the she-cat had slipped from camp for some hopeful hunting but a combination of the heat of the day and her own drowsiness had left her with practically nothing. Just a squirrel she'd have to pick up soon.
Her heart lifted at the sight of another cat--Cardinalstar by the look of it--and she almost called out a greeting to the leader. Nightscreech stopped herself short, noticing the cat's posture and carefully remained quiet. She didn't want to bother the cat and send the fish she was after away in the process. Cautiously she slipped away from the bank, not wanting her shadow to fall on the water and disrupt the leader in her catch.
Even so, she didn't feel like just turning and heading into the forest and leaving Cardinalstar to do what she was doing on her own. Nightscreech was a social cat by nature, and the chance to speak with the leader on her own wasn't one she was going to pass up. She settled down carefully, tucking her paws daintily under her chest and curling her tail around them around her paws. She hoped that the leader had at least seen her out of the corner of her eye--or scented her. She'd hate to startle the cat after her catch.

the fish was particularly shy about swimming in the shallows, cardinalstar was quick to realise. no wonder it had taken her so long to notice. the riverclan she-cat narrowed her eyes, keeping a close eye on her quarry while it swam just out of paw's reach. starclan forbid she lose track of prey she'd spent so long seeking out. cardinalstar's whiskers twitched, the only part of her moving lest she scare the fish away with a careless movement. 'just a little closer, fish. you're not getting away -' one mutli-coloured paw whipped towards the water in a flash, and knocked a flailing minnow onto the riverbank. the tortie raced over to the silvery-scaled fish, quick to deliver a killing bite before it had any chance to flop back into the water.
three fish caught in total. cardinalstar purred softly, happy with her haul of prey. the minnow was smaller than the two trout from earlier, but it would suffice. it was only then that riverclan's leader realised she wasn't alone on the riverbank. the she-cat looked up sharply and made eye contact with the dark-furred she-cat who was resting quietly close by. "nightscreech," she mewed after a moment, blinking slowly at the warrior. she smoothed back her fur, which had been bristling slightly in surprise; she hadn't expected to be caught unawares on her own territory. clearly she'd have to be more attentive in the future. cardinalstar motioned towards the fish she'd caught for the day. "what do you think? not bad for an old she-cat, eh?" her lips quirked into a small smile.
cardinalstar sat back and began to groom her fur, having noticed that she'd splashed herself with water catching that minnow - it also gave her further opportunity to disguise her embarrassment at being caught unawares, but that was besides the point. "what brings you out to the river?" she asked between licks.

nightscreech i been waitin' to smile, been holding it in for a while!
Nightscreech found her muscles tensing under her dark fur despite herself--caught up in Cardinalstar's catch almost as much as the leader herself. She relaxed when the leader managed to snag a fish from the river, a soft purr of satisfaction rising in her own throat before she could quite stop herself. She didn't really notice that Cardinalstar was--perhaps--uncomfortable with her presence. The black she-cat merely lifted her tail in a quiet greeting and dipped her head politely to her leader at her greeting.
"It was a fantastic catch," Nightscreech purred, genuinely meaning every word. "Far better than what's been running in the forest--all the prey seems to be hiding from the heat."
"I wouldn't go so far as to call you old though, you don't act like it anyway," Nightscreech added, feeling a twinge of uneasiness wash over her as she peered at the calico cat. Cardinalstar still had to be at least twice as old as Nightscreech though--the warrior simply hadn't considered her old. Not like an elder, but she was getting on in her years wasn't she? Nightscreech's heart felt a strange pang of nervousness, and she was reminded suddenly--harshly--of the mortality of every cat in her Clan.
If she could somehow gather them all up to her side, if she could simply curl around them and protect them from everything in the world... Nightscreech shook her head. That wasn't possible, and her friends and family were warriors. She couldn't expect them to be comfortable with her wanting to protect them all anyway. Least of all Cardinalstar, who was wiser than Nightscreech by many moons. A blossom of affection filled Nightscreech's chest for the other cat, "I was trying to see how the prey was running so I could figure out where it was best to work with Sootpaw tonight. I want them with decent hunting experience before Leaf-fall." It was far away yet, but it would sneak up on them if she wasn't careful. She added with a purr, "They're a fine apprentice, I'm happy to be training again."
And out of the nursery, she added silently, twitching her tail. As much as she loved her kits she felt she'd go stir-crazy if she was trapped in the den a little longer.

cardinalstar hid it well, but, internally, she was glowing with pride at the younger she-cat's praise. her features only brightened slightly, a slight smile appearing on her maw in response to nightscreech's purr. "heh, i guess sleeping through the heat of the day is the most sensible action." it was rather hot out, wasn't it? cardinalstar blinked, for the first time realising that her multicoloured pelt was unreasonably warm where it hadn't been in contact with water. she'd been so focused on the task at paw that she hadn't even noticed the uncomfortable levels of heat. still, she'd face the greenleaf heat any time if it was for her clanmates. garnering praise in the process was just a plus that she would happily bask in.
"oh?" she quirked a brow at nightscreech. "well i certainly hope i seem younger than my age," she said cheerily. her tone was light, but it was true that cardinalstar feared letting her moons get to her. she had many seasons left in her, but she needed them to be functional years. after all, how could the tortoiseshell riverclanner serve her clan to her fullest if her body couldn't keep up? "fat lot of good nine lives from starclan would do me if they didn't give me the vigor to utilise them all, eh?" cardinalstar stretched luxuriously, relieving muscles that had been drawn taut for the past few hours of hunting. "at the very least im not graying around the muzzle anytime soon." the she-cat smirked.
it was hard not to feel old, though, when she observed clanmates that's she'd known as little kits coming into warrior-ship and training apprentices and raising kits of their own. cardinalstar nodded approvingly at the black cat's words. 'good initiative.' she'd been right to trust nightscreech with sootpaw's training. "by nightfall the prey should be running out and about with any luck. when the hunting patrols come return i'll have them tell you if they've found any good spots today." she said, finally finished with her grooming. "is training coming along well, then?" the she-cat asked, always curious about the progress of riverclan's future warriors.

nightscreech i been waitin' to smile, been holding it in for a while!
Nightscreech twitched her ears slightly and found herself sneezing quietly in laughter at Cardinalstar's words. She was pleased to see that the she-cat did indeed have her spunk, one less thing to worry about. The warrior cast a glance over her dark shoulder to swipe her own tongue carefully over the fur there, trying to hide how relieved Cardinalstar's words made her feel. The leader had many, many seasons ahead of her--coupled with the lives StarClan had given her she would surely outlive even Nightscreech right? She would like it if the older she-cat were around to give Nightscreech her elder ceremony, StarClan grant nothing ended her life before that time.
"Thank you Cardinalstar, Sootpaw and I would both be grateful for that," Nightscreech felt a small burst of excitement. She couldn't wait to tell her apprentice about that, certain that the dedicated young cat would put all their heart into the training for the Clan. The black she-cat blinked at Cardinalstar, allowing herself a soft purr of happiness at the thought of her young apprentice. A chance to let Cardinalstar know about Sootpaw's promising points was not something she'd turn away, "They're a fantastic apprentice! Though they're not what I'd consider naturally talented, they make up for it with their dedication and effort. I've never met a more dedicated apprentice though..."
Here Nightscreech faltered, something like worry working through her. She'd known Sootpaw since kithood, having shared the nursery with them for some time with her own kits. Sootpaw's parents had never been close or particularly nurturing, and Nightscreech who naturally was stepped in to look after the young one. Sometimes she worried she was being more motherly than mentorly, "I worry about their opinion of who they are, and their worth. I've not been training them long enough to really see if it's a problem but..."
She shook her head, "They'll shape up I'm sure, and I'll help Sootpaw understand they're important if I have to." A stubbornness entered the she-cat's meow, and she blinked, realizing with a start that she'd been talking a rather lot about the cat. "Ah, sorry, I can go on about the apprentice. They're dear to me." As was every member of the Clan, but still.

Despite the fact that no one could really pinpoint why, Heatherface was not the most friendly she-cat. From an outsider’s perspective, it seemed that she had little reason to be so unfriendly. She grew up with a loving, supportive family, and still held close ties with them, but for whatever reason, other clan mates found themselves skipped rather abruptly when it came to affection and companionship. She just didn’t want to be around anyone else. It was what had found her pacing alongside the riverbed for much of the day, worrying more and more over the recent silent treatment she had been receiving from her brother. It was enough to unsettle her to the point where she actively considered doing what had previously been unthinkable…
She was going to spend time with other cats. She was going to converse with them and if she couldn’t figure out the reason he was avoiding her, she was going to make it so unbearable for him to do so that he would have no choice but to stop. She had to know. He had to tell her, himself. Silence would never do.
And so, when her path took her to a point where she saw Cardinalstar and Nightscreech at the banks with a few dead fish close by, Heatherface did something quite strange for herself. She kept walking towards them. Known for going out of her way to avoid others and for being quite unreceptive to socialization, it was more than odd. It was almost wrong.
”Lovely fishing,” she commented idly, nodding towards the scaly bodies that littered the pebble-strewn banks. Stopping about a fox length from the other she-cats, Heatherface sat back on her haunches, wrapping her fluffy tail neatly around her paws. Not for the first time, as the heated rays of the sun beat down on them from above, she found herself grateful for the lighter coloring of her ginger and white fur, and for the fact that despite her coat’s appearances, it was nowhere near as thick as it seemed. If it had been, she doubted she would have ventured far from the shade during the midday heat.
”It’s hard to teach importance, isn’t it?” Heatherface said. Perhaps it was her mixed tone, or simply the fact that she rarely engaged herself with others, but it was difficult to tell if she meant it in a negative or positive light. ooc// heather is mega weird w/o her bro’s, v-sorry, hope it's okay to pop in, if not she'll just wander off next post or something.

cardinalstar found herself smiling as nightscreech rambled on about her apprentice. she certainly didn't mind hearing about sootpaw in depth. quite the opposite, in fact. leadership came with many perks, but it also kept her busy, too busy to be as involved with the riverclan apprentices as she'd like to be. after all, she could only sit in on so many training sessions before her presence came across as questioning the abilities of their mentors. that left the warriors as her link to the youth of riverclan.
and while the black she-cat spoke, cardinalstar noticed another cat joining them by the riverside. she gave heatherface a friendly blink, slightly surprised that the white-splashed tabby had chosen to join them. the cat usually kept to herself didn't she? still, the riverclan leader was not about to turn the other she-cat away. "thank you," cardinalstar mewed, fur fluffing out proudly at the compliment. she'd worked hard for those fish. "i've always worried that sootpaw wouldn't take well to apprentice duties," she admitted after a moment, turning her attention back to nightscreech. "i saw how badly they wanted to become a medicine cat apprentice. being denied can't have been easy..." the tortoiseshell feline trailed off, a scowl threatening to form on her face. she gave her pelt a brisk shake. it wouldn't do to linger on the past, the state of affairs with riverclan's medicine cat was something she tried not to think too hard about.
"you'll be able to help them, whatever flaws they see in themselves, i'm sure of it." she met nightscreech's eyes when she spoke, voice resolute. cardinalstar caught herself, realising she may have been too forceful. she mewed again, more gently this time. "i trust you to train them. i picked you to be their mentor for a reason after all."
cardinalstar shifted her green gaze back to heatherface, raising one brow at the other's inquiry. she held her tongue, waiting to see what nightscreech had to say on the matter instead of replying herself.

nightscreech i been waitin' to smile, been holding it in for a while!
Something about Heatherface was worrying Nightscreech--this wasn't to say she was not comfortable with the cat approaching them. Heatherface was a member of RiverClan, which meant that Nightscreech cared about her even if she did not talk with her. It was just that though--Heatherface didn't just talk to cats like Nightscreech or Cardinalstar. Nightscreech twitched her ears and peered behind the she-cat, as if expecting some other cat to join their party.
"It is difficult yes," Nightscreech meowed, jarring herself and blinking warmly at Heatherface. "If one doesn't understand they're important then it's hard to change that. I wish it were simple, but the mind is a stubborn thing in all the points that matter."
Nightscreech furrowed her brow in silent wonder--she still wasn't sure why Halfpatch would want to turn poor Sootpaw away. She'd worried about that as well, but Sootpaw was almost over-enthusiastic to become strong. Nightscreech just wasn't sure that their reasons were completely right, was afraid about where they placed themself compared to her son Eelpaw or even the rest of the Clan. Even so, the she-cat felt a small burst of pride flood her from ears to tailtip, "Thank you Cardinalstar. I will do my best, really it's just a matter of letting Sootpaw know that there's already greatness in them."
A purr rumbled out f her throat though, to be complimented by the Clan leader was nothing to sniff about. Even so, she set it aside, her concern for Heatherface rising up once again. She cleared her throat, trying to think of how to approach the situation without upsetting the cat. She just never spoke with Heatherface much, "How is everything with you Heatherface? You're mentoring Violetpaw right?"
She didn't want to make Heatherface uncomfortable by seeming overly concerned--after all if the she-cat was upset it wasn't necessarily any of Nightscreech's business.
