it was abundantly clear that some cats just never learned if only one were to regard volepaw. the little tom's escapades were growing more and more frequent, even though he'd been told many a time that sneaking out wasn't exactly someting he should be doing - but it was clear he didn't seem to care all that much at all. sure, he didn't like to make anyone upset, but if he could manage to slip away in the interest of fun and practice by himself, who was he hurting? no one, that was who. it was a wonder his mentor hadn't taken to watching him 24/7, though. volepaw was honestly lucky that most of his adventures had been under the radar so far. there was no telling what kind of reputation he'd have by now otherwise - not that he really seemed to be worrying too much about that currently.
no, volepaw's mind was filled with something else entirely - the thought of exactly what he'd come out here to do tonight. he was just past the sunken forests now, right near the edge of the riverclan border, where the water grew deepest - though currently he stood on marshy ground instead. he wasn't ready to plunge in just yet. still - it had recently come to his attention that he wasn't the strongest of swimmers. that wasn't good! he liked being in the water, nonetheless - perhaps a fair bit more than some of his clanmates, even, especially considering how murky and sediment-filled their streams and flooded areas usually were (volepaw had never given a mousetail about grime or dirt - who cared, really?). he just simply hadn't had enough time to practice yet. so here he was, where he could finally do so! wouldn't this be great fun! he supposed he should probably be worried about something or other - it sounded like the sort of thing cypresspaw would be warning him about, but for the life of him volepaw could find no reason to worry. he guessed maybe he might drift too far downstream and be trespassing, though he didn't exactly suppose a cat could leave scent marks in a river anyway. he could probably justify it if he did end up straying too far. either way, he was here now! he'd managed to sneak out, and the moon was high in the sky. starclan was watching him. surely if they hadn't approved, they'd have come right down to where he stood and told him off. but they didn't! so he knew everything would be fine.
now... where should he begin? didn't older cats always say you should just jump right in to something if you wanted to learn it? well. that didn't sound like the best idea, maybe. he'd just test out the water, for now. see how it was. leaning as far forward as his little body could reach, the tabby tom extended one foreleg and then dipped it down into the depths - and then let out a mrrow of surprise. there was a current here! there hadn't been much of one further back into shadowclan territory. he guessed maybe it picked up as it got closer to the 'ocean' thing that riverclan was next to? something like that. he wasn't one to bother with details, usually.
but the water did feel nice and cool. without thinking much more on it, volepaw decided to simply dive in. the current didn't feel very strong.
of course, he would be proven wrong immediately after he had jumped. the current wasn't admittedly that strong, no. but with his whole body pulled by it, however slight, and with the minimal knowledge he had of swimming he really had no hope in fighting it. he was expending all of his energy just to keep himself afloat as it was. the current tugged him downstream, even as the shadowclanner paddled to keep his nose over the water. whoops. he definitely hadn't thought this through. now he was just kind of being pulled farther towards riverclan territory. and with no real means of stopping himself. he didn't even know how to swim at all, really. whose idea had this been? it was terrible! oh right. his. oh well, he mused. they can't all be winners. he bet foxtail would probably have been pretty upset with him right about now if he had been anywhere nearby.
oh, right - the situation at hand. it was becoming increasingly more dire by the heartbeat, he decided. he was able to keep his muzzle over the surface for now, so he wasn't in any immediate danger, but... something told him he should probably at least make some effort to feel worried. huh. so... what exactly could he do here?
he paused to ponder for a few moments, still paddling as he was carried farther and farther along by the current - and probably well past the border by now - before he raised his voice to call out, as loudly as he could manage while still struggling to keep himself afloat. "hello? is anyone there?" he attempted, the tiniest hint of mild concern in his voice. "i'm in a bit of a predicament! can someone please help me?"
