as you all may know, riverclan has a deaf cat by the name of doveflight. doveflight is currently in the elders due to an inability to communicate with the other cats of the clan. sorrelwhisker decides to try to come up with a way to communicate with doveflight and teach them a bit about being a warrior, spurring on the beginning of the plot. this plot will center around the development of sign language in riverclan and the teaching of sign language not only to doveflight but to any cat in the clan willing to learn it.
this plot is inspired by doveflight and will initially center around them, but it will spread out to other cats in the clan. we welcome you to think up potential uses and plots for sign language, as well as post ideas for signs here!
roles needed
hard of hearing cats: swannose, doveflight mute cats: open?? sleetpaw maybe?? initial teacher: sorrelwhisker discoverer: swannose
riverclan cat(s): open!
potential plots
1 riverclan cats using sign language to silently ambush cats of other clans or predators.
2 later down the line, a deaf kit (or existing mute cats) being born in another clan and, the other clan having found out about the sign language, the clan trying to bargain for a cat to teach their clan sign language. maybe developing their own language in response when rejected - or kidnapping a riverclan cat, you know, whichever works.
signs
tapping mouth with paw: food, may mean hunger kneading with mouth open: water, may mean thirst

eat/food/hunger - probably the simplest to teach. tap your paw against your mouth twice. could be taught while offering food, during a meal, et cetera
drink/water/milk/thirst - kneading paws accompanied by the opening of the mouth (to symbolize a kitten/milk)
mom - bringing one paw up to tap at the bottom of chin/muzzle
dad - bringing one paw up to tap once on the top (center) of forehead
done/finished/i'm on it - paw raised, tapped on ground three times in quick succession
more/again - paw held out, turned upwards (so pawpad is showing), head tilted to the right
careful/watch out/caution/afraid/uneasy (could be used to signify a cats fear or general discomfort, or also to warn another cat to be fearful aka 'watch out', depending on facial expression) - paw placed on center of chest and ears turned back briefly
bad/no/negative/none (in general, could be applied to a lot) - paw lifted up towards face, then turned outwards in a dismissive/quick motion (like a paw flick) in the direction away from the signer (could also be applied to other things to negate them)
know/knowledge/i know(when paired with negative sign, don't know/uncertainty etc) - paw tapped on the top right side of head, followed by an ear flick
medicine/healing/medicine cat/etc herb related - one forepaw placed on top of other one, then a 'grinding' sort of motion (as in making a poultice)
danger/bad thing/various bad animals (since they wouldn't need separate words. could be coupled with no for no danger etc.) - head jerked downwards quickly, briefly pointing nose towards ground (as if telling another cat to hide/be afraid, sort of)

apparently being up late at night makes me super forgetful because i never thought to mention that i've had a mute riverclan apprentice in the works for some time.
palepaw's bio should be finished up pretty soon so he can get involved in this too. i had it set so that he had developed his own little signals and silent body language cues that his brother (potentially played by starks if she still wants him) and sister (doe is playing the sister, violetpaw) can read fairly well just because they're littermates and grew up close, but it's not the most efficient and if he caught wind of someone else in the clan working on better ways to communicate he'd jump on that one hundred percent.
