Sleetpaw is a cat that many would take to be nervous or shy, at least at first glance. Since her third moon, she has not uttered a single word aloud. Whether she truly can't, or if she simply has nothing to say, nobody knows. But with the help of other cats from her clan, she can communicate her intent with body language instead of words.
In fact, she is rather the opposite of shy. Whenever she acts, she acts without a single shred of doubt in her mind. She has no voice in her head that makes her doubt or worry, almost to the point of recklessness. So, she tends to fade into the background much of the time, only to suddenly be brought back into focus suddenly. In a tense diplomatic meeting, she would be the first to attack the enemy when it seems like things aren't going her way.
She has a tendency to disregard some of the rules or ideas that her clanmates follow. For example, she understands that she is not allowed to hurt her fellow clanmates, and that kits must be fed before the rest of the clan, but she doesn't understand why she is forbidden from leaving the camp without a warrior, because she is capable of taking care of herself.
She respects her mentor, Heronstrike, for his skill and the recognition of her own. However, many of the beliefs that he tries to instill in her never really take root. She cannot understand why the clans must be divided, and why some in the clans, such as her own mentor, are so devoted to their identity as a clan cat.
Part of why this is, is that she has difficulty sometimes in telling people apart from each other. She tends to form an idea about how "people" act to her, rather than how individuals do. So, discrimination is often somewhat lost on her, since she barely notices the difference between clans, let alone that that's between individual cats in her own clan. But, after some effort, she can recognize people she cares for.
HISTORY Sleetpaw was born to a litter of three, carried by a she-cat named Shadepool. The father was a tom named Owleye, once the apprentice of Shadepool. But he was only a "donor father", so to speak, because Shadepool loved another she-cat, Mantisheart, so they asked him to father the kits so they could have a family of their own.
But, Mantisheart would only be their mother for a short time. Less than a moon after being born, she vanished from the lives of the three kits. Sleetkit was never told how she passed, but whatever happened caused Shadepool to sink into a deep sadness. She neglected her own health, and her kits suffered for it. Without good milk, only Sleetkit, the strongest of the three, made it to be weaned. Before she was apprenticed, Shadepool wandered away from the clan, devastated from the loss of her love.
So, Sleetkit would grow as a lonely cat. Always cared for by her clan of course, but she allowed herself to drift to the edges. That is, until the deputy of the clan, Heronstrike, saw potential in her and requested her as an apprentice, which she became. But, even then, she was somewhat of an outcast among the other apprentices. In particular, two older apprentices, Swanpaw and Starlingpaw, went out of their ways to make things difficult for her.
The two littermates tormented her out of the sight of other cats for a moon-and-a-half of the apprenticeship. But one day, Swanpaw came to be resentful of her sister for her ambitiousness and controlling tendencies, and began to defend Sleetpaw instead of going along with her sister. Since then, the two of them have been nearly inseparable, even as Swanpaw became Swannose.
Sleetpaw has been to only a single Gathering, when she was 9 moons old. Through a combination of bad patrol assignments, various antics(such as sneaking away from the camp with Swannose), and plain bad luck, it was only her fourth chance that she finally went, and would meet her first cat from another clan, Volepaw, apprentice of shadowclan. The two of them would somehow become friends, perhaps because(unknown to them both) they were siblings through Owleye, their shared father.
