Antlerheart gave pause as the grass beneath her paws quickly transitioned into sand. The she-cat had been part of the dawn patrol, and though weary and itching for a nap, the stuffiness of her nest didn't seem appealing. The sun was out, the sky was clear, the air was hot -- not the weather for being in a den all day.
The RiverClan warrior made a quick decision and veered from camp towards the ocean. The ocean, and specifically the rocky beach, was Antlerheart's favorite place in the whole territory. The air always had a salty taste, the beach was always crawling with something interesting, and the ocean was a wonder in itself.
Like most, Antlerheart understood little of the ocean aside from what she could see, but she had dreams of one day discovering more. The currents in the ocean were unlike those in the rivers, streams and ponds she was used to swimming in, and could be more tricky to navigate -- though the seals and whales she often saw seemed to get along just fine.
With a gentle snort, Antlerheart resumed walking, purring as the sand squished between her toes. She didn't hesitate as she walked up to the shoreline, instead pausing only when the waves lapped at her white-furred ankles. She didn't need to scent the air to taste the saltwater, but she did anywas, hoping to catch a hint of something a little more exciting either on the waves or just beneath the surface. If all else failed, Antlerheart knew it'd only be moments before she convinced herself to dive into the frothy waves.

eelpaw had always been a light sleeper, and when one of his denmates accidentally stepped on his tail as she left for the dawn patrol, the black tom had been jostled awake. there was no use trying to go back to sleep. once his mind was up, it was running around like a windclan rabbit. eelpaw stood and, after a good pelt shake, poked his head outside of the den, squinting at the sky. the sun was just climbing over the horizon. his ears perked at this revelation. oh, the ocean would be beautiful to see at this time.
without looking for permission, the tall black tom crept out of camp, following the dawn patrol's trail so that they shouldn't happen upon him at the beach. once he was sure his clanmates had passed this area, he darted down toward the rocky shoreline. eelpaw slowed when his paws just touched the waves and let their rhythm calm him down after his run. his pale yellow eyes widened in awe as he caught sight of the sun, now a fair distance above the horizon, sending colors like pink and orange scattered into the sky. some of the rays reflected off the ocean's surface.
without much more hesitation, eelpaw slipped further into the ocean. he could feel little shards of broken shells on his paw pads until he no longer touched the bottom. quickly, he dunked his head under. eelpaw didn't do this a lot, as it stung his eyes every time, but the black tom opened his eyes for a few heartbeats. he spotted an awesome clam shell at the bottom, and swam down to grasp it in his jaws. his lungs were screaming at him for air, and he gasped in a few breaths when he broke the surface. this shell was incredible, almost a rainbow of colors. the whole thing was still intact, which was rare. he was beginning to swim to the shore as a multicolored figure caught his eye. oh starclan, it was antlerheart!
eelpaw scrambled up the sand, setting the clam down. a sparkle snatched his attention, though, and he realized there was a small shiny, cloudy-looking ball inside the shell. it was really pretty--maybe the elders knew what it was called. his eyes darted up to anlterheart and resolve solidified in his chest. he knew what to do with the shiny ball. grabbing the clam in his jaws, he padded down the shoreline to where the older she-cat gazed longingly into the ocean. "hi antlerheart," he spoke quietly. his own heartbeat pounded in his ears. "i was just swimming," he said, as if his pathetically soaking-wet pelt didn't already explain, "and well i found this clam! yeah, and you know, i like clams," eelpaw cringed at that. his ears flattened against his head. "well, anyway, there was something really pretty in it," he bent down, retrieving the cloudy ball from the shell, setting it in front of her paws. "a-and, i don't know, it sort of reminded me of you." oh starclan, had he just compared her to a tiny ball? heat flooded his cheeks.

Antlerheart’s gaze on the ocean wavered when Eelpaw began hauling himself towards the beach with what appeared to be an impressive catch. The brown calico turned her body towards him and sat, pulling her tail through the sand to wrap around her feet as she watched him curiously. She was no stranger to swimming in the ocean, but it wasn’t often that she dove – that trick was not one all cats were fond of, let alone could do well. Antlerheart loved the water but wasn’t keen on it invading her nose or ears.
Her blue eyes shown bright as the black apprentice moved towards her. She, embarrassingly, didn’t know much about the young tom, but what she did know of him was positive. ”Hi Eelpaw.” She greeted back, whiskers twitching. He was quiet – nervous almost – and Antlerheart couldn’t fathom why. She was well-known in the clan for her outgoing and friendly personality and hadn’t met a cat yet that was nervous around her. She gave a small purr as he continued, explaining to her that he had been swimming. ”Oh really-“ She purred again, this time her whiskers quivering with amusement that echoed on her face as a smile. ”I thought your always walked around with wet fur.” She continued, gently poking fun at the younger cat, though her smile remained to show it was all in good nature.
It only seemed to get worse from there.
The tom fumbled through a particularly awkward sentence, earning a quizzical look and a quirked brow from Antlerheart. The more he spoke the more and more the she-cat got the feeling that she really did make him nervous, which meant one of two things in her mind. Either he didn’t know her well and found her intimidating – perhaps just because she was a warrior – but more realistically, he could also have a crush on her. It reminded her of a previous apprentice of hers, Owlpaw (now Owlbur), and their kind-of romance. She had put a stop to it before it had turned into anything and knew she’d likely have to do the same with young Eelpaw.
”Great find! Clams are…interesting. I hear if you can crack their shells they taste pretty good, too. If you don’t mind the slime.” She encouraged as she watched his ears fold briefly against his skull.
"well, anyway, there was something really pretty in it, a-and, i don't know, it sort of reminded me of you."
And there it was.
Antlerheart blinked in mild surprise and felt her own ears and cheeks flood with warmth. StarClan! How was she going to handle this? Inhaling, Antlerheart bent to study the small ball he had placed in front of her. ”That is a pearl. They are rather rare and uncommon to find.” She explained, lifting her head and meeting Eelpaw’s eyes. ”It’s very lucky, I would say, perhaps it means there are good things for you in your future – at least that’s what the elders used to tell me.” She grinned, tilting her head ever so slightly as she considered him. He was cute, in an innocent sort of way, but so young and inexperienced in both the world and in love. She didn’t want to crush his spirit, but she wasn’t about to lead the tom on if she could help it.
”Is this a gift for me?” She asked. "They are quite special, and beautiful, wouldn't you want to keep this for your nest or give it to someone special in your life?"

”that is a pearl. they are rather rare and uncommon to find.”
so that's what the shiny ball was. eelpaw had heard a few elders speak of pearls in their stories, but he never pictured they would look like this. it was compact and cloudy, but glittery and iridescent. the black tom could almost see his reflection in it. his gaze cut over to the clam and for a brief moment he wished he had the power to produce these pearls at will, just like the clam could. then he never would have to worry about finding them for antlerheart. this time was by accident, but now that he knows what they are, surely she will want more! but they might not be as special as this first one. eelpaw glanced up to search the pretty she-cat's face, and a bubble of disappointment hit him when he realized she looked confused. antlerheart began to speak again, and this time she smiled at him. it made him feel a little better.
”is this a gift for me?” eelpaw nodded slightly at her words.
"they are quite special, and beautiful, wouldn't you want to keep this for your nest or give it to someone special in your life?"
the black apprentice looked back down at the pearl he had set between antlerheart's front paws. she had a point, but he felt like the older warrior was special to him. he really liked her, at least. but maybe she had a more experienced, more handsome warrior going after her. he could never compete with that. so what if she was twenty moons older than him? someday soon he'd become a strong riverclan warrior and would fetch as many pearls for his loved ones as possible. the only other person he would want to give it to was his mother. nightscreech loved him more than anyone, but she already knew that her son loved her back. eelpaw told her all the time. he raised his gaze back to the warrior. "well i do care about you, antlerheart. i have no one else to give it to," he spoke. "it deserves someone to take care of it. you seem good at that." but what if she didn't want it? maybe he should give her an out. "if you really want me to keep it, then i promise i will come tell you who i give it to, when the time comes," eelpaw said.
he knew his crush was unreasonable, and it wasn't fair to trap antlerheart in it. that didn't mean he would stop liking her, oh no. he'd just hide it a little better. who knows, maybe he will find someone to like him back one day. then, he could give the pearl to them. desperate to change the subject, eelpaw spoke again. "so, how about that sunrise?"
