quick, accurate paw steps flittered across the mossy forest floor as she made her way to the agreed meeting spot. mothstar's sharp blue gaze did not stray from its path straightforward. the cream she-cat was lost in thought, as usual, and had no time to get distracted by the scenery. her trademark scowl made its way onto her features, deepening the creases on her brow, the harder she thought. the only reason she ever agreed to this was because it would be beneficial to her clan. the territory was still new to them, and discovering every crevice was an important step in understanding their new land. she was still not quite sure how he was getting anything out of this arrangement, but she mentally shrugged. his loss was her gain.
mothstar slowed her pace as the clump of four or five tightly wound trees came into view. that was supposed to represent some semblance of a border between skyclan and thunderclan at one point, but she couldn't be sure if that still stood true. borders were constantly shifting, and the she-cat knew it was because of her presence. giving her pelt a quick shake, the small she-cat glanced around. foxstar hadn't arrived yet. the thought made her hackles rise and her unsheathed claws sink into the mossy ground.
of course he hadn't. he went through life pretending everything was a game. not one of her interactions with him had been serious, despite her efforts to keep them so. but he was doing her a favor, she had to remind herself. he had better things to do than show her around. still, he should at least be diligent and on time, because she had better things to do than sit around and wait for his presence. she turned her icy glare to the direction she figured he would appear from and waited.

the misty morning had hastily fallen away beneath the onslaught of heat from the upcoming afternoon, and the slender tom couldn't say he minded a bit. fog always had a way of making him feel a fair bit of unease- perhaps simply from all the fighting he'd done in shadowclan lands over the course of his life. nevertheless, the warm pulse of sunlight that now trickled down through the foliage above was a welcome sensation, and he absolutely reveled in the feeling of it on his silken pelt. it gave him the boost of confidence which he would never outwardly admit needing, but as one of the newest leaders and one who had taken such a bold stance on skyclan, he felt his position of power standing on treacherous ground now. he wasn't exactly worried, but he was becoming more wary than his usual reckless nature most often allowed.
sunhigh was still a little ways away, so he made a quick stop to catch himself an unfortunate little mouse and then, with it clasped gingerly in his powerful jaws, bolted up a nearby tree trunk with practiced ease. she would likely be here early, so he had consciously woke in a timely manner for the occasion and was rather pleased with the sneaky position he had secured in waiting.
unfortunately, his plan was rather foiled by his inability to stay awake in the face of pleasant sunshine and gently rustling leaves around him, while that mouse sat comfortably in his belly. suddenly a dream roused him and his bright eyes shot wide in alarm. what time was it? a quick glance at the shadows assured him he hadn't quite overslept, but the noises below him gave all the answers he needed.
foxstar inhaled deeply, then softly touched down to the ground behind her with a gentle thud. "my, my! i always seem to forget what a pretty little thing you are!" he crooned, emphasizing the word 'little' with a glitter of dark humor in his sky blue eyes as they lighted on her deep, ocean-colored gaze- always so critical. "shall we begin then?" he added, bowing with a flourish of his tail.

she was unprepared for the lean tom to appear behind her, and when he did, mothstar turned herself around with a quickness that made her dizzy. the ginger tom made her uneasy, along with his unnaturally bright eyes. the sharp glare never left her features as the tan she-cat watched foxstar slink up to her. she had to force her hackles to lower at the sight of him and the she-cat let out a quick breath of air. this was going to be a long day.
"my, my! i always seem to forget what a pretty little thing you are!"
mothstar could not suppress the eye roll she felt coming at his comment. "you're insufferable," she spat. it wasn't like he was the largest cat in the forest, either. foxstar was the tall, almost elegant type, with long enough fur to give his lean body just enough volume. his paws were fairly large, though especially in comparison to her little ones. she could take him, though. that she was sure of. the almost smug look on his face said he thought differently. she wanted to rake her claws across his too-handsome features. an embarrassed heat flooded her cheeks at the thought, which only made her angrier. no, he was about as pretty as a dead slug.
"i suppose we shall," she commented back, mocking his choice of words. really, she needed to be a bit more diplomatic but foxstar seemed to wash away her inhibitions. the petite cat padded around the close-knit clump of trees, further into the mossy forest. her claws often snagged the green stuff, so she sheathed them again, tossing a glance over to her fellow leader as she did so. soon after, a stream caught her gaze, and mothstar picked up her pace toward it. the water was clear, allowing a good view of the smaller fish that swam in its depths. her head tilted to the side. "would it be beneficial to learn how to fish here?" she questioned, sparing a glance at the tom next to her. "i have absolutely no clue where to start, though." it was true, she'd never fished in her life. the she-cat found foxtstar's reflection in the crystal waters, searching his face.

when the small she-cat spun to encounter him he had to try his very hardest to suppress a deep chuckling purr in his chest at the fact that he had so nearly managed to fluster the high strung little leader- she was so difficult to unbalance. perhaps that was why he always so desperately did his best to get under her skin. she seemed like the kind of cat who needed a bit of lightening up anyway. at her retort he did grin, and perhaps a hint of it was genuine for he snorted back, "that scowl is so unbecoming." and then flicked his tail in a motion for her to come along.
sizing up mothstar was ever impossible. she was a stony individual with a rawhide-tough resolve that seemed utterly unshakable. always. he felt her searing glance at him and returned it with a goofy grin, crossing his eyes at her. the lanky tom liked the idea of the other leader being somewhat at his mercy. sure skyclan was fierce and proud or whatever, but they were really struggling to make allies out of the other clan. his outright support of them and willingness to give up so much of their former lush forest and craggy mountains just to give the new beggars a home both stroked his oversized ego, and gave him something of an advantage over them. the whole gesture seemed to say i gave it to you and i'll take it back just the same! and thunderclan would. but it wasn't likely. as much as mothstar loathed him and skyclan mistrusted thunderclan, he wouldn't cave to the other clans' anti-skyclan demands if it was the last thing he did. for once, his stubborn nature benefitted mothstar. upon thinking this, he wondered if she knew it too. likely not, she didn't have a decent thought about him. with an inward chuckle, foxstar thought that the little pale leader would be just as happy to slit his throat as to ask his advice on her new lands.
he was content to trot along beside her in silence until something needed to be said, but probably wouldn't. foxstar truly struggled with keeping his trap shut, and this outing was no exception. "you're welcome, by the way dear." he offered with exaggerated graciousness, curling his tailtip as they carried a brisk canter over the sloping forest. "no need to swoon over my generosity or anything," he remarked dryly and softly, not really expecting the stoic she-cat to humor him with a reply. she ought to know by now that anything she said was as good as ammunition for him.
he stopped before her at the stream, peering down into it and pricking his ears for her inquiry. "we leave the fishing to the otters-in-cat-pelts down south," he answered shortly, glancing over at her. "these minnows are little more than toys to bring home for the kits," the ginger tom added as an afterthought. "skyclan cats are good climbers? if not, you had better teach them. with all the cliffs and tall trees around here, your clan will mostly be living off birds, their nests, and the squirrels that raid them. warriors will be able to feed off of things like owls and hawks, but make sure smaller cats have caution with them. they like the mountains." the long tomcat babbled slightly, picking up the pace again as he spoke, and made a graceful leap over the stream before turning and gesturing for her to follow. "oh and you had all better learn to deal with racoons. we have a lot."/div]

the ginger tom quickly brushed away her question about fishing with a flick of his tail. her brow furrowed even more, if possible. if there was pretty to be had, shouldn't her clan have it? but with a longer look at the size of the fish, mothstar had to admit she agreed with foxstar. their sleek bodies were too little to be of any use. in skyclan's old territory, their diet consisted of mainly birds and small mammals. she thought their eating habits would have to adjust here in these new lands, but in actuality, the geography was fairly similar. there was more water here in general, though, and she certainly thought fishing would be a skill her cats would have to adapt to, but foxstar talks as if thunderclan doesn't even fish.
"we leave the fishing to the otters-in-cat-pelts down south."
he meant riverclan. apparently they had a certain affinity to water--perhaps she should take his advice for once and move on. it's not that she didn't appreciate what thunderclan has done for them, but honestly, she still felt threatned by everything in this foxdung forest. even the clan that was supposedly on their side and especially the cat who lead it. he had agreed to help her in ways she knows she wouldn't have done if she were in his place. why? mothstar tried not to question it. she doubted it was solely because he thought of himself as a good cat, one who would drop everything and lend a paw to a ragged group of leftover cats. it irked her that he had taken their side at all, but still, there was gratitude somewhere inside of her. by taking her side, he had turned his back on three clans that had lived beside thunderclan for, well, forever. he must have seen something in skyclan to do so.
the small she-cat was shaken out of her reverie when foxstar made a leap over the stream. she followed silently, ears perking when he mentioned raccoons. there hadn't been many in the old lands. she might have spotted two in all her time there. it looked as if they would have to adjust to non-cat dangers as well. the duo of leaders padded on, and for a while, mothstar stayed quiet. an idea crossed her mind, however, and she padded towards the trunk of a thick oak tree. it's branches extended into the blue sky, mixing it's leaves with it's neighbors. "perhaps you could give me an idea of the current borders, hm?" she wondered absentmindedly. she knew they were fragile, but it might help to know what another leader thought they were. an expert on tree climbing, mothstar quickly sunk her claws into the bark, scaling the tree in seconds. the leader settled on a particularly high branch that overlooked the valleys below. she was momentarily breathless at the view, getting lost in the sea of green. she slid up the branch a bit, making room for foxstar. "are they even relevant anymore? i know our presence did much damage to them," she sighed. the last thing she wanted was to hurt other clans by taking their territory, but skyclan had run out of options. this new land was their only hope.

of course thunderclan fished, especially in the winter when everything else was hibernating and the mountain streams still ran fast and fresh. the minnows of course weren't much, but they were more to give to the elders or queens who desperately needed the nourishment offered by the energy-packed little slimeballs. but what if he wanted that stream back someday? sure he was here to offer council, but not like that! his flesh rippled with being so blatantly deceptive, but he also didn't think anything like that was particularly harmful either. he blinked and flashed those baby blues in mothstar's direction, weakly attempting to decipher her carefully held features. that face gave nothing away, truly.
"honestly brighten up sunshine! look at all this beautiful land you get to call yours! your cats get to have kits again, and retire and become elders!" he nudged her like he might do to an old pal, completely blind to any social borders he often crossed. surely he was asking to have his nose clawed, but that attitude! he wanted to shake her, but his frustration was light and airy. a better you than me kind of frustration that allowed him to chuckle and tease while he spoke, knowing she couldn't really lighten up even if she wanted to. this was a hard life for her, and reminded him to be grateful for his - thus far- cozy existence. "i don't think anyone is gonna chase you guys out," foxstar offered all the reassurance he could muster, though he couldn't back it up of course? the other leaders were obviously itching at a chance for both he and mothstar's throats. he would defend his decision to defend skyclan at all costs, though. at this point he was certainly too young to allow for admitting mistakes, or all respect would be lost. that and defiance were fueling him with a fiery passion that could spark something dangerous.
"borders, right." the tom nodded sharply, "it seems like whatever patrols decide to mark is the border for the day doesn't it?" he remarked cheerily, as if this were nothing of concern. how could he go about acting like he was interested in marking borders with an ally and neighbor? "i know our border with shadowclan is rather mysterious, but why don't we come up with something official now, between us? if we can't decide on something official, who could?" he was fairly certain he could take as much as he wanted without much complaint from the she-cat.
"before you came, the mountains were little used anyway, so i don't regret giving those up. my cats have always preferred the more green areas, but this particular patch we're in here has caused some resentment. if you'll follow me, i think there's a good marker up this way that could work though." the thunderclan leader went on, motioning for her to follow him up a rocky outcropping that, once crested, continued in an elevated area of the forest. up here a cat could taste stale scents of deer and mice. he trotted just a few fox-lengths further and then motioned with a movement of his muzzle. "up there there's a deer trail that runs down straight toward the veiled tree, almost unbroken." foxstar let his voice trail away, turning instead to gaze down into mothstar's face, searching.

"honestly brighten up sunshine!"
just the tone of his voice made her cringe. brighten up? mothstar would like to shove him into her position. how in the dark forest was she supposed to feel weightless? skyclan depended on her. they looked to her to keep them safe in this foreign time. she lied to herself, to them, every day. she couldn't promise their health. the forest was struggling to regain its lost balance after their arrival and nothing was certain. even the ginger tom padding next to her could disappear any time he felt like it, snapping the pitiful sense of security they had. his light-hearted shoulder bump only fueled the tension in her body.
"i don't think anyone is gonna chase you out."
he didn't know that. no one knew that. despite the hero he thought he was, skyclan's safety wasn't secured by the lone fact that foxstar had decided to side with them. though mothstar would never stop owing him that, it didn't automatically save them all. there were still three other clans, angry that land was taken from them. one thing she hadn't been prepared for was how attached the clans were to their territory. now that she lived among them, she understood why. it could be snatched up by another at any given time. "you can't be so certain, foxstar. you are far too confident for your own good," mothstar sighed, turning her gaze to him. he was a fairly new leader, just like her. yet he was so immature about his effects on other clans.
still, the cream cat followed him as he padded across the territory. fleetingly, she wondered why exactly she decided to place her trust in him in the first place. liontooth had questioned this as well during their conversation at sky falls. she had said something about him being genuine. that still stood. mothstar didn't think he would be agreeing to an alliance just to go around her back and plan a raid. but she also knew that him backing out of said alliance was a possibility. that knowledge kept her on her toes every time she was around him, despite his attempts on getting her to loosen up. blinking her blue eyes, she realized foxstar had been speaking the entire time they had been walking.
he had led her to a deer trail. apparently, one good to serve as a border. glancing at it, mothstar had to agree. there was a clear line that the deer had driven into the ground. she nodded. "finally, something a little more clear," she huffed, turning to meet his gaze. his suddenly was too intense for her to keep, so she shifted it toward the new border. an itch of irritation stung her, whether it was from his stare she couldn't tell. "why are you helping us? for real, not some answer you pulled from your tail," she snapped, challenging gaze locking on his. what were his motives?

the tension within her was radiating outward, nearly palpable in the warm afternoon air. foxstar swore he could have touched it before a light breeze kicked up and blew it all away and she spoke- there was a touch of exhaustion in her voice that almost made him cringe. when did he get so soft? he had done the best thing he could for her, and the mercy he had shown her pitiful lot was unparalleled by any other clan in the land, but he could have sworn she was determined to take their misery out on him anyway. would she have been happier if he opposed them so vehemently as well? he almost chuckled. well that way at least his sly generosity wouldn't have been so frustrating for her, and she could go on hating him with justification.
you are far too confident for your own good. he gave a defiant bark of laughter, almost an exclamation in its pointedness. he was tempted to point out that there was no such thing as 'too much confidence' when it came to the fate of a clan that wasn't his own, but just shook his head. "starclan rules us all," he told her slowly, as if she were a slow kit. "all of our medicine cats saw this coming, which makes it fate. if someone makes a move against skyclan they will be smited," he looked at her questioningly, though perhaps she couldn't comprehend this. maybe she was too caught up worrying about whether or not foxstar was sneaking into skyclan's camp and eating their kits to see common sense when it stared her in the face. "now you, as a cat, may be a casualty of this all, sure. but skyclan? nah. they're stuck here now." the ginger tom remarked casually, twitching his whiskers.
at last, he was pleased immensely to see that she didn't seem all too upset by the prospect of using the deer trail, perhaps even satisfied? he wasn't trying to jump to the conclusion that she might have managed to tug the stick out of her ass, so he regarded her carefully but nodded all the same. "it's a little hard to find sometimes, but if we pointed it out to our warriors i think it would be common enough eventually. and it leaves plenty of this particularly nice forest on both sides-" he would have gone on babbling had she not snapped at him like that, and for this he was thankful he hadn't been lulled too much by her lack of opposition on the border marker, though his ears flattened slightly. her glare was just enough to make him want to tear off some of those elegant white whiskers of hers and he rolled his eyes in response. "starclan above," he spat, exasperated, "what do you think i get out of this, honestly? what do you think i'm gonna do to you that i could gain by defending you from the others? look," foxstar took a breath and finally returned her sharp gaze with something resembling a calm if reproachful stare. his voice was beginning to take on the same condescending tone as it had before, "starclan says you're supposed to be here, right? everyone can agree on that anyway. who am i to fight them? who am i to even be bitter about them. starclan has never failed us, nor you as far as i can tell. what more do you want? a juicy secret? i can't believe you of all cats think i'm smart enough to scheme up something. fine, how about this-" the tom glanced away, just realizing that his ears were blazing, "ruststar and boarstar are not my best friends. i keep hoping a fire will jump up and swallow them, but it hasn't happened yet. instead, here shows up this rag-tag bunch of furballs. well, if you would take your cursed pride down a notch and take what's being given then maybe you could be my fire. worst case, you get to be a nice barrier between windclan and myself, and a good catalyst to piss off boarstar enough to let me get my claws in him." at his conclusion, foxstar was a little surprised mothstar hadn't interrupted him, but the passion and exasperation of his thoughts had certainly turned his stare into something much more heated.

she was almost surprised to see the tom get snippy with her. she had obviously pushed enough of his buttons that it pushed him over the edge. in his gaze there was no more playful shine, just a hard determination. that alone shocked her into silence as the tom went on. he had never really seen this side of him, the more business side. and after his comment about her pride, she wasn't sure she liked it. mothstar narrowed her eyes at foxstar, but shut her jaw when he continued. arrogant piece of foxdung. at least his reason for siding with her made a little sense. she almost envied his trust and faith in their ancestors. she had no such feelings toward them, other than the twinge of gratitude she had for sending her clan here. at least they managed to keep a handful of her cats alive. flashes of the fire crossed her thoughts, but she pushed them away. now was not the time.
". . . then maybe you could be my fire."
her sharp eyes snapped back to him at these words. she didn't like them. didn't like how they made her feel. and why her? or her clan? all she wanted from this wretched place was peace for her cats. an indescribable rush of protectiveness surged through her, giving her shivers. so what if she was his fire, his catalyst? did she want to be? no. but what other choice did she have? foxstar had given up his reputation to side with her. mothstar should refuse him nothing. however, just because she should do something does not mean she will do it. time and time again she has proved that. these past moons have wound her so tightly that just thinking of war made her want to have a full-out tantrum right then and there. she didn't want war, not like foxstar. for starclan's sake, she just wanted her cats safe. this irrational anger continued to bubble until she felt herself finally speaking up.
"i am not offering skyclan to you as a barrier, foxstar! these are actual cats we are talking about. not expendable bodies. no matter how much i feel like i owe you, that does not give you the right to hang this alliance of ours over my head, just out of reach," the leader spat, raising her chin to meet his stare head-on. "i am grateful you took our side and gave us a home, trust me, i am. but starclan didn't lead us here to start a war. all i wanted from this was peace and health for my clan, and so far i have been stepping on eggshells around the other leaders to avoid clashing. screw them!" a huff came from her chest, eyes blazing. "this is our home now, like it or not. i despise this political foxdung, and i'm not going to risk the lives of my cats so you can go play war with your buddies."

her reaction was.... less than desirable, he thought. as he spoke, he could see the fire growing and raging in her cold blue eyes, and nearly sighed and gave up. he managed to finish though, and almost braced himself for the tomfoolery she unleashed on him then. mothstar was truly very cold, or very hot. listening to her fire off on him, he wondered if he held anything in between, or if she regarded all cats as though they were dirt stuck between her pads.
he sighed, listening to her retaliate with sharp words and that barren glare, and realized that yes, this was a cat who had truly never interacted with other clans before. could he even blame her for this naivety? the political foxdung was everything that being a leader was about in this forest, and she was going to learn that one way or another, and he opened his mouth to tell her so, but thought better of it and snapped his jaws shut in an instant. this she-cat was not going to listen to him, foxstar realized with something akin to a crushed feeling in the pit of his chest. rather, she was gonna learn the hard way, but she would learn. it suddenly made so much sense to him why she mistrusted his alliance so- she didn't realize it was give and take. no wonder she was suspicious! she didn't think she had to give anything back! lighting upon this realization, foxstar snorted aloud, then realized a harsh chuckle when she finished. "ha!" he barked, and rolled his eyes. "it just occurred to me how very lost you are here, mothstar. maybe you really don't belong." what he had meant to emerge as a casual -if condescending- comment actually poured from his mouth as a snarled threat.
he surprised himself a little, having thought he'd learn at least a bit about keeping his temper in check, but truly once she'd pushed him this far, he was having none of her attitude. "you're going to clash with them," he promised in a low voice, pale blue eyes locking onto her dark ones, "for your foolish sake, i hope to starclan that you will acquire just a pinch of diplomacy before windclan and shadowclan conspire to get rid of you all once and for all and decide to send battle patrols to your camp while you sleep." foxstar drew himself up with a lash of his tail, "because then you're gonna need me." the ginger tom turned and stalked back to the other side of the deer trail before becoming shrouded in the shadows of his own territory.
