Fallentree ~ 112 ~ Tom ~ Elder
The tom woke silently, as he always did. His first reaction was to glance to his Denmates to see if they were all breathing. It might have seemed stupid, but he just wanted to make sure he didn't have to call for the medicine cat's help. Once he was sure everyone was alive, He lifted his head further and tasted the air. It seemed sunny enough and he hopped that it would stay so. The worst thing was to take the effort to move out into the sun, only to have it run away after a bit. Luckily, once the day wore on a bit, there were plenty of helpful young'uns who were willing to help him retreat to safety. It took a good five minutes before he was fully on his feet. His back legs were thin and weak and he couldn't go far without help, but he could at least get to a sunny spot where the rays poked in through the roof of the house. He shambled slowly and steadily, taking every care not to twist something or have a leg go out from under him. Eventually, he made it to his spot. He flopped down with a sigh and looked around. He had chosen this spot long ago and it was perfect. His back was against a large stone so he could sit up with little effort and see much of what was going on. It allowed him to speak to cats for a few minutes as they passed by without hindering their day. And best of all, it was sunny for hours and he could just bask and stay warm. He wondered if anyone would come talk to him today.

the sun was rising higher and higher yet in the morning sky, and sedgepaw still found himself with no instructions. he supposed his mentor was busy that day - but that did not stop him from feeling uncertain and uneasy at the prospect of being left to his own devices. normally he was quick to do as he was told, and were he told to go train now he would - but instead it seemed he was the one in charge of his actions today. he could not help but wonder if his mentor had forgotten about him - after all, it wasn't a hard thing to do, now was it? his father had managed it.
the thought wasn't fair at all - of course his mentor would not forget him. he mentally chided himself for allowing his thoughts to go down that path. either way - he knew that, though he hadn't been expressly told to do so, apprentices were supposed to tend to the elders, right? he hadn't even been apprenticed for a moon yet - it barely felt like a few sunrises, even. being left to his own devices, however obvious his path should have been from there on out, made his pelt crawl, even though he was enjoying just sitting and listening to the sounds of the camp and of nature. (sometimes the tom wished he could sneak out of the camp by himself just to sit and listen somewhere. he liked it.) without another thought, he rose from where he sat near the apprentices' den and made his way quickly towards where the elders would be.
as he approached the shelter the elders slept under, the patched tom noticed that fallentree, one of the older of the clan's elders, was quite a fair distance off by himself, laying in a patch of warm-looking sunlight. sedgepaw's ears twitched as he considered whether or not he should approach the older cat; in the end, however, he decided it was probably best, even if he felt awkward in doing so. the elders were alright. after his mother had died, he'd spent at least a good few sunrises here in his kithood, when the nursery had grown too lonely, though he doubted that many would remember him. he'd quietly listened to their stories, yes, but he was, on the whole, a somewhat forgettable presence, he thought - not to mention that he hadn't been here quite that often, preferring usually to go off on his own and listen to the sounds among the camp rather than hear the elders' tales. still - he knew at least that grumpy as elders could be, they weren't all that bad. and he couldn't back out from this; it was his duty, at any rate.
reaching fallentree's side then, sedgepaw gave him a respectful dip of his head. "good morning, fallentree," he mewed, a little haltingly. "is there -- um, is there anything i can help you with?" there. that was good, right? he hoped so, at least. he blinked expectantly at the elder, doing his best to keep his paws still and his posture confident, even as the curling and slight twitching of his tail behind him betrayed his nervousness. was it silly to have asked fallentree so directly like that...? he hoped not - maybe if he didn't need anything, he'd have a story or two to share? or perhaps sedgepaw could be dismissed, allowed to go back and return to his quiet observation of his surroundings... well. one could always hope.

Fallentree ~ 112 ~ Tom ~ Elder ~ WindClan
The frail tom lifted his head slightly to see who had spoken to him. Ah, young Sedgepaw. he hadn't been an apprentice that long and already he was being left to his won devices. What an odd why of mentoring. But who was Fallentree to question a warrior's ways. Pale yellow-green yes blinked warmly at the tom and a soft smile lit his face. good morning, fallentree, is there -- um, is there anything i can help you with? Fallentree chuckled softly but it was more like a wheeze. Well, Young one. You can start with getting rid of those nerves. I may be old but I'm not scary. Heck, I don't even have enough teeth anymore to bite!" He laughed again at his own joke but it quickly turned into a fit of coughs. Once he had regained his breath, he looked over at the young tom. I wouldn't say no to a good meal but I don't think i can finish an entire piece of prey on my own. Would you join me and share some food with me, young one?"[/b]

sedgepaw could not bring himself to return the elder's soft smile, but he did dip his head gratefully at it - at least he wasn't responding with hostility. some elders could be grumpy, but fallentree was alright, at least in sedgepaw's opinion. "well, young one," the elder said then, and sedgepaw blinked, doing his best to stand a little straighter then as he listened, as if at attention. "you can start with getting rid of those nerves. i may be old, but i'm not scary. heck, i don't even have enough teeth anymore to bite!"
oh. as fallentree's laughter punctuated his words, then dissolved into a bout of coughing, sedgepaw grimaced briefly; he gave one paw an embarrassed lick, then swiped it over an ear, feeling shame prick at his pelt, nearly more overpowering than his nervousness. "sorry," he mumbled, looking a little downcast, even as the elder was beginning to regain his breath.
"i wouldn't say no to a good meal but i don't think i can finish an entire piece of prey on my own," fallentree was saying then. "would you join me and share some food with me, young one?' the patched apprentice blinked, then nodded quickly and a little over-exaggeratedly, giving his tail a somewhat excited flick. at least that was something he knew how to do. straightening back up, he turned and left, making his way to the freshkill pile carefully. it was still morning, so there was not much here yet - but the dawn hunting patrol had already come back, and sedgepaw noticed a particularly plump-looking greenleaf rabbit among the prey on the pile - enough for two cats to share.
before much more time had passed, he had returned to fallentree's side, dragging the rabbit along with him. (whether or not he'd like to admit it, he was still pretty small - he was only six moons old, after all. but he'd managed to get the prey there, and that was what counted - whether or not its hind legs might have been a little dustier than they had been before.) "here you are, fallentree," sedgepaw mewed politely after he had dropped the rabbit at his paws. "maybe we could share this?" blue eyes hesitantly shifted their focus upwards, as if to meet the yellow-green gaze of the elder. "if that's alright with you," he added then - he couldn't forget his manners.
