a quiet rumble echoed in the tom's dreams, causing a few restless twitches before he stilled once more. however, his sleep had been thoroughly disturbed, and though he did not know it, his hopes of a lazy day of relaxing in his den were rather quickly dashed. slowly, as if moving through a thick liquid, the tom's consciousness emerged from deep sleep.
the rumbling continued. in his dreams it had taken the form of his empty tummy pining for a meal, but as he gained awareness of his surroundings, he realized that the gentle sound was of a distant storm. the thunder did not roll near enough to be a disturbance, but there was a soft patter of rain that could be heard outside. without opening his eyes, the tom wondered if the storm was moving closer, or further away. if it was on its way, he would need to rouse some warriors to fix some last-minute holes in the nursery's roof that he had been putting off.
and just like that, he was awake. it was pointless to toss and turn now, so instead he opened his eyes and turned onto his stomach and rested his head upon his forepaws. peering into the pre-dawn gloom made for good thinking, and that was exactly what he did.
he didn't realize that he had drifted back to sleep among the soothing storm-sounds until he reawoke to the chatter of birds atop his den. with a startled blink, foxstar bolted upright and shot out of his den- had he overslept? he knew his deputy would take care of everything if he had, but still! the ginger tom stopped short, and blinked again, clearing the sleep from his over-bright eyes. the leader sighed, and paused, ruffled from oversleeping, and decided that before he went about causing trouble and bugging his clanmates, he had best be looking his most handsome. leaning back on his haunches, foxstar set about to a thorough grooming just outside of his den, relishing the morning sunlight drenching everything around him, and the smell of fresh rain soaking his senses.

it wasn't until about her seventieth moon that the fluffy she-cat first felt the now familiar tug of discomfort at her joints when the air pressure changed. storms, blizzards, even the occasional cloudy day - they were all enough to cause an ache here and there all through her aged body. now, as she lay in her nest within the intertwined bracken that formed the elder's den, poppyfur knew, without using any other sensory clues, that there was something brewing nearby because of the way her body felt.
needless to say, it was going to be a rough morning.
sleeping in is a pastime of many elders, and poppyfur was no exclusion to said pastime. in fact, many days she did indulge in such, but when the soothing plops of rain outside the den grew further and further apart, until they eventually stopped altogether, the femme knew it was time to rise and greet the new day with a grouchy groan.
as the old she-cat creaked and cracked her way out into the clearing, her green eyes landed on a handsome ginger tom not more than a mere three or four tail-lengths away. a deep purr rumbled from within her throat, and her wretched teeth exposed themselves in a delighted smile. "oh, we-e-e-ll, mister foxstar. don't you look as handsome as always?" the elder bantered, approaching him from the side, her matted curls looking as ravishing as always.

the slender tom didn't notice the approaching pawsteps until it was much, much too late. at the rasping draw of an elderly voice, foxstar's tongue snapped quickly back into his maw as he bolted upright, brows raised. he gave the elder a wary sidelong glance- for all his flirtations, he wasn't sure he'd ever get used to the equivalent of his grandmother giving him the eyes all the time.
"why, poppyfur," he began, stalling slightly as he grappled with himself. respect your elders! well of course, that was pounded into the brains of every cat at a very early age, he couldn't not respect her, but poppyfur seemed to like being a special case to the rule. "i certainly do my best!" he finally replied, with a chuckle that was not nervous. "gotta keep the ladies interested ya know? it's the bachelor life." he relaxed slightly with those hazy green eyes fixed on him with a blazing sense of humor. the tom turned and continued his grooming session, though he kept a sunny blue gaze continuously flicking toward the stormy gray she-cat. at least she didn't have a reputation for being cranky, but he did wonder what she wanted. just bored with the other elder perhaps, and looking for hapless victims to flirt mercilessly with.
"how are orchid and stone doing?" he asked casually, glancing up. "do they visit you enough? i can make them, if they don't ya know." he promised with a wink.

poppyfur had always rather liked the young tom. he'd been a delight to watch growing up, and he truly wasn't far apart in age from her own kits. it was amusing to watch him try to gauge what the correct reaction would be to such a phrase from the lips of an elder. she purred softly, flicking her tail as she stood there listlessly, green gaze meeting his from time to time as his blue orbs flicked over to hers.
"are there many ladies interested?" she asked a bit pointedly. "i haven't seen you courting very many, foxstar." her brows raised a bit tenaciously. "if an elder is flirting with you, then you're bound to have a harem somewhere!" poppyfur continued, snorting lightly as she finished meowing. her raspy pink tongue drew over her lips, tugging lightly at the fur lining the outside of her mouth.
ah, yes, changing the subject. good tactics, especially for a leader. poppyfur shrugged. "orchidnose has her own family, which i do respect. i see the kits often enough. they change my bedding and bring me little treats. it's very kind of them." the fluffy she-cat sighed. "stonefur is busy enough still trying to figure out that little she-cat that scurries about him." a flicker of a smile crossed her matted visage. "i do think he quite likes her, though he's unsure of how those things work." poppyfur's gaze shifted skyward. "at least the rain has passed, no? my joints still ache." she chattered mindlessly, rattling on and on.

are many ladies interested?
his ears pricked at this, and he froze for a second with rather a shock at this forward kind of conversation. sure, foxstar wasn't exactly great at speaking with nuances, but poppyfur was starting to make him flustered. that, of course, was not okay. he didn't wanna ruffle her feathers, but boy was she getting nosy! after his moment of hesitation, he resumed his methodical bathing, now going over his shoulders, one at a time, before replying casually. "oh goodness yes, they're all interested," came his assurance with good nature sparkling in his blue-tinted gaze. "but they all wanna settle down- i'm still a wandering soul didn't you know? one does not simply tame a foxstar," the slender tom rumbled with a mixture of a purr and a chuckle, twitching his tail tip.
when poppyfur went on about her kits, he nodded as she spoke to acknowledge what she said. still, he wasn't the type to small talk about his own warriors. he was already quite certain of what orchidnose and stonefur were up to lately, but bringing them up to their mother did seem polite. the ginger tom glanced up when she mentioned her joints, and grunted. "poppyfur i really hate to admit this, but i swear to starclan that i actually heard my bones creak when i got up this morning." he shuddered theatrically at the very thought of this. "i'll be retiring before we know it," foxstar joked, finishing his bath by grabbing his tail and drawing a few quick swipes over the plume.

poppyfur snorted, nodding her fluffy head as the tom replied to her, ensuring her that all of the ladies were interested. "good, good, i am very happy for you, foxy boy." the elder adjusted her weight from one side to the other, decided that standing at all was simply a bad idea, and plopped herself down suddenly as though she'd fallen. "settling down isn't the worst thing in the world, little one." scolded the grey she-cat lightly, her green eyes twinkling good-naturedly.
"find a lady that lets you stay wild and, well, i think you'd have it made." her words were punctuated with a wink, and her mouth contorted itself into a sideways smirk. in the meantime, she nibbled lightly on the inside of her cheek and lip, fluffy tail flicking back and forth as she sat there observing the ginger tom.
at the mention of his bones creaking, the she-cat had to bite back a hearty guffaw. her eyes rolled and rolled, and poppyfur blinked away the dizziness brought on by it. "complain to me here in fifty moons or so, eh?" at the mention of retiring, poppyfur snorted. "yes, because soooo many leaders retire." the she-cat nibbled at an itch on her right shoulder thoughtfully. "you've signed up for the long run, and unfortunately, there is no easy way out of your duties, foxy."

the soft morning light was beginning to show signs of a blazing summer heat by this point in the day. while foxstar had certainly slept in, he was still surprised when he noticed the warmth already sinking into his ruddy fur and spreading through his flesh like fire. today was going to be a great day for sunning, that was certain. he thought later he might head up further into the mountains to find one of his favorite clearings and do some solo hunting and napping.
he sharply glanced back at poppyfur as she crumpled to the ground, and raised his brows in alarm before he realized she just.. lacked the grace to make a calmer descent. letting out a sigh of relief that the old she-cat's heart wasn't about to fail right in front of him, foxstar cocked his head. "are you hungry? i am. hang on, i'll fetch something." like a polite apprentice, the leader dipped his head and darted to the fresh kill pile, which was still rather full from the night before. he eyed a rather fat little stoat and grabbed it- making sure to push all the other bits back into place before trotting back over to where poppyfur had landed.
sliding down before her, he pushed the stoat at the elder generously. "anyway, what were we saying? ah yes, the ladies. all of 'em." he blinked wearily. "i'm not particularly afraid of settling down, i just haven't found anyone who has any desire to keep up with me. i haven't really been looking either. 'been kinda busy," he added drily with a sly grin. he bobbed his head in agreement with that statement though- he wouldn't much like being tamed.
he chuckled and shook his head with good nature. "hey im not that young! i coulda been a grandpa by now if i had worked a little harder at it!" he protested feebly, humor lighting his pretty gaze as it rested on her gnarled features and kinked mane. "i'm not trying to get out of anything," foxstar assured his companion with a solumn expression, though the glimmer in his eyes did not fade. "the long run indeed."

she observed from afar his polite behavior when regarding even the fresh-kill pile. after he'd plucked a fat rodent from it, foxstar had pushed it back together, which made poppyfur smirk. what a perfect little boy he still was. a purr caught lightly in her throat as she looked on at the camp around them, as light continued to filter down through the trees more and more generously. "stoats are my favorite, boy-o." poppyfur commented as the ginger returned. with a polite smile, she took a bite, then another, and gulped them down happily.
"ah yes," the grey she-cat piped up. "find the right one and you'll be set until, well, in your case, she likely meets her death long before you." there was a bit of a twinkle in her eyes, but poppyfur was being honest. leaders lived longer than most of their clanmates. it was no lie. but enough of that! "busy keeping old coots like me company." poppyfur noted lightly, flicking her tail at a fly that buzzed annoyingly in the air nearby her.
she snorted when he called himself 'not young.' please. "yes, and i could have been a great grandma had i worked a little harder too." poppyfur teased back, eyes twinkling. her shoulders raised in a lazy shrug as he repeated her. "oh, you've got endurance. you'll be fine, little boy." the elder teased, whiskers twitching as she dove down to take another mouthful of stoat. she swallowed the delicious meat and pawed it toward foxstar. "don't let this granny eat the entire thing!"

when he flopped down before her, a burst of air popped from his mouth in a gush, making something of a sigh. he was already getting sleepy. he was always a little sleepy if not being active. laying around chit chatting with poppyfur was gonna make him need another nap later. was that disgraceful? he snorted at the idea. he was the boss around here, and he'd nap when he damn well pleased! coalgaze usually had everything under control anyway when foxstar himself was absent, so there was no cause for alarm. he turned his attention back to the elder after she munched a bit and had started chatting again.
oh yeah, mates. he laughed aloud at this, "hey you know what? i think i'll just have to snare myself another leader!" he joked with a bawdy wink at the frizzy gray cat, leaning forward to take a delicate bite himself. he chewed thoughtfully, making a show of it, then after spitting out a particularly tough clump of stoat fur, he finally nodded with mock decisiveness. "yeah i think the new skyclan one will do. she's pretty! kinda boring though. cardinalstar is much too old and mean for me. meaning no offense of you, My Most Gracefully Aged One." he bowed his head deeply with respect, though the joke was played out clearly, if kindly. then he shrugged again, once more becoming (somewhat) serious. "you know honestly i haven't really given taking a mate much of a thought." he left the more morbid bit of her comments left untouched. he didn't need to go getting all existential. it was way too early in the day for that nonsense.
he laughed suddenly, and cocked his head. her nicknames were so weird. poppyfur was certainly a character. the thought of outlasting his clanmates and getting so acquainted with the elders didn't seem all too bad. he obediently tucked into the offered meal, feeling sticky blood start accumulating between whiskers among his slender maw.

a mocking frown crossed her maw as foxstar began speaking of other leaders. it'd been a long time since poppyfur had seen cardinalstar, and she hadn't seen the new leader. "what's her name? the skyclan one, i mean, of course." the elder stumbled over her words. "describe her too, while you're at it. be my eyes since i rarely get to escape this here camp." her words were laced with a wistful sigh, and the light in her eyes went funny for a moment as she lost herself in her younger days, when she still could explore without the tug of aching muscles and joints and pure exhaustion after very little.
a laugh escaped her when he gave her a nice title. "ohhh, please, do call me that always, foxy." the elder cackled, cooing at him and stretching her neck out like the words were giving her immense pleasure. poppyfur looked at him thoughtfully when he confessed to not giving much thought to taking a mate. "i suppose for toms it's a bit different. you could father a litter anytime."
she looked off at the rest of camp. one of her grandbabies was darting out of the apprentice den, and a smile graced her aged and unruly features. a purr rumbled lightly as she watched the young one, and pride in her family surged. "i picked a good time to have kits, though the tom didn't stay." the old she-cat commented softly, green eyes still watching others in the camp. "do you think you'll ever be a father?"

the slender tom gave a hearty stretch as he noticed the sun finally began to beat down with some enthusiasm, just then beginning to bore hotly into his longer fur and warm his flesh. it felt so good, he thought. good enough to make him wish he could find a nice spot and simply sprawl all day, but alas. who had time for that? maybe tomorrow. always maybe tomorrow, considering how much he had on his plate at the moment. it suddenly occurred to him that while he had apparently snared poppyfur's attention for the moment, perhaps her coucil ought to be sought. well, he knew she was almost nuts. maybe that was worth something when it came to advice. while he would never admit it to himself, he was simply searching for an excuse to be reckless in the face of all the opposition. if that meant clinging to the advice of an old she-cat if she said what he wanted to hear, then who was he to fight it?
"mothstar," foxstar replied to the elder, blinking down at the stoat, of which he took another stringy mouthful and gulped it quickly down before going on casually. "she's actually really pretty. small and mostly white, longish fur. she's got some, like, patches of light colored stripes i think, here and there ya know?" he gestured around his body with a waving tail tip. "she's got some gigantic blue eyes. dark like, and cold. she's not really the nicest cat as far as i've gathered, but how could i blame her? if i was in her position i'd be scared witless." he admitted with a light chuckle, closing his eyes and inclining his face to soak up some sunshine.
"speaking of which, what do you think of this whole thing?" the tom spoke after a long pause in the conversation, face still upturned as if blissfully unaware of the interclan turmoil. his words were casual as usual, but poppyfur was no fool. surely she knew what he sought from her. had he done the right thing? foxstar still couldn't see how anyone could think otherwise, but in the back of his mind was completely aware of the fact that he was totally alone in his opinions of the new clan.
he flicked his tail at the conversation of mates and kits and that kind of frivolous stuff. "i never thought of it cuz i was busy being awesome and showing thunderclan who was boss, obviously." he joked, "i didn't care about kits then, and i really still dont now. i think i'd be a good dad but i've still got a lot to take care of before i think about raising more little cats in this hectic place! for now i'll just stick with apprentices and visiting the nursery, thanks very much!"

"ah, a pretty one. about damn time." poppyfur commented, snorting and listening to foxstar go on about her. small and white and stripes here and there. very descriptive. the elder couldn't help but smirk at the tom's grand description. "those gigantic blue eyes sound interesting. i was always a sucker for blue eyes." she met his with a wink, a purr rumbling for a moment in her throat. "not yours, though." the grey-brown she-cat teased, whiskers twitching as a chuckle escaped.
hmm, he wanted her opinion. how fitting it was that a young leader would ask counsel from his wisened companion. poppyfur was pleased, extremely so. someone actually wanted to hear what she had to say. the she-cat mulled it over for a few moments. "well i assume the other clans aren't happy. they're all a bunch of frizzy furballs." poppyfur started, still thinking. "but we can't just let a whole clan of cats sit in our paws and die. so," the elder took a moment to breathe. "i believe we're doing the right thing."

the tom laughed again, not realizing at once how much he enjoyed the entertainment that poppyfur was so willing to supply him on this morning, creeping into sunhigh. he grinned appreciatively before he nodded, "i know right? i'm pretty sure cardinal used to be pretty, you should know! i probably wasn't even alive that long ago though," he chortled, a soft snort sounding in his nasal passage. the tom's head did bob slightly though, "you'd probably think she was cute. i'm not sure how anyone couldn't. the other leaders are probably just jealous cuz her clan seems to actually like her," the leader laughed again, relishing the thought of boarstar seething over something so trivial.
"not mine!" foxstar squeaked indignantly, "what! mine are the best." his indignation was a mockery in good humor as he batted his lashes appealingly at the elder. however, she didn't really seem to have much to say on skyclan- he supposed this was all the same to her, what did she care? her position could hardly be considered jeopardized in spite of the interclan chaos ensuing around them. he agreed though, with both her words and attitude, what was everyone panicking over? starclan had spoken, he thought the other clans ought to come to terms with it sooner rather than later so he could quit losing sleep over their melodrama. "i'm glad you think so," he spoke genuinely, taking another small bit of stoat to chew thoughtfully. "i think they're just looking for excuses to get pissy with everyone else. as long as no new alliances come of this then they could chew each other to pieces for all i'd care. and you know what? it's gonna be really nice to no longer share a border with windclan. sharing a border with a clan indebted to us is going to be refresh, i think." he commented lightly, then sprawled out on his side, eyes closed for maximum sun-soaking. "what a beautiful day!" the tom added as if that were much more important than any politics.

"eh, cardinal's always looked a bit stiff to me. plus, i'm not into calicos and torties. they don't make toms like that, y'know." poppyfur mewed with a wink, purring appreciatively at her young leader. oh, how vibrant and youthful he was. it amused her to the core. the elder nodded, her head bobbing a bit too much as she listened to him speak. "indeed, she does sound cute. just be careful your eyes aren't spending too much time on her pretty little pelt, foxstar." poppyfur was teasing, but she still watched to gauge his reaction. "an ally is an ally, but that alliance may change at any time. skyclan will one day be our rival just like the others. be mindful of that, especially now as we're giving them so much aid."
at the mention of skyclan liking mothstar, the grey she-cat laughed aloud. "yes, because thunderclan can't stand your very existence, foxy one." a smirk came across her lips again. she nodded again at his words. "i always hated windclan. too skinny. too fast. the trees make them nervous, and it's funny to listen to them chatter about it at gatherings when they think no one is listening." poppyfur noted, purring again at the memories. "it shall be nice to have grateful cats next door, even if temporarily." the elder agreed. she looked up at the sky filtering through the spaces in the trees above and felt the warmth on her aged skin. "yes, it is. though my joints have informed me that it may not be this beautiful the entire day."

the pale tom shrugged with an air of arrogance about the gesture, willing to tell poppyfur just how much he'd like to see skyclan try to turn on thunderclan, but only if they were willing to be flattened to dust first. however, just as he open his mouth he thought better of such braggery, and snapped it shut again. she was right, of course, but he was tough coming to terms with these things. he would have liked to think that skyclan would be forever grateful for thunderclan putting their own neck on the line to form an alliance with the weakened group of cats, but alas. that would only happen in foxstar's own perfect little world, and he occasionally was forced to remind himself that such a place didn't actually exsist.
instead, he stayed quiet for a moment- slightly out of character for him, but thinking about the mess that was his patchwork alliance with the rag tag group always wore him down to silence. until one of the other clans made a move, it was useless to him anyway, and merely a source of worry when he thought too hard about it. he blinked and looked up, "well i didn't mean that exactly, but i know they're becoming wary of me." he chuckled, though there was a bit of a defeated look in his blue gaze as he peered away, watching cats mill about the camp.
he stood, suddenly, and shook out his silken pelt with unspoken deicision. "i'm really sorry poppyfur, but i need to go. do you need an escort? i can make apprentices do that kinda stuff you know." the leader smiled warmly, but was all of the sudden aware of how much time he had spent lazing about with the elder, and suddenly the judging gazes of the cats around him was a bit too much for him to stomach. and anyway, aspenpaw needed to finish up her training and he had thought to take that upon himself. delaying her warrior ceremony was only hurting his clan. "i need to go find that apprentice!" he explained almost sheepishly to poppyfur, then, with a dip of his head, trotted off in search of her.
//hope that its ok that im wrapping this up!
