WHEN TOMORROW COMES, it had hardly been a moon since the black tom had been given wasp-paw as his apprentice. it had been a while since he had a young cat to teach and when the old mentor of the apprentice had moved to the elders den, there was no denying that starlingflight was a strong mentor for her. he hadn't known the young cat very well, in fact he didn't know most of his clan mates that well at all. but, he loved to bring the new warriors into the clan, his belly full of pride that he had taught them most of what they had known. there was nothing like bringing new life into the clan, though he wouldn't know that experience. instead, he only knew about teaching that new life, and he was fine with that. some cats just weren't meant to have mates. the tom paved his way through the forest, assuming that the young she cat was trailing behind. he hadn't seen much of what she already knew, and since it was green leaf, it was a good time to see how her hunting skills were coming along. the sun was highest in the sky now, and while he usually preferred to hunt in the early dawn, when the heat wasn't so torching, he figured the she cat wouldn't appreciate that very much when they hadn't really had the time to get to know one another. as he came to what he assumed was the center of the forest, he came to a halt and waited for the she cat to catch up. if she did, he lowered his haunches, flicking his ears, then wrapping his long tail around his paws. "not every apprentice gets to have two mentors." he meowed, a cheery gleam in his eyes. the tom was in a surprisingly good mood this day. the clan knew well about his two-sided nature and most would completely avoid him when he was on one of those bossy stampedes. he almost felt bad for the young apprentice whom had to see him on both days. but, he had promised himself the day he had been named her mentor, that he would try his best to teach her well, and leave his not-so-friendly side out of her pelt. it wasn't like she chose for her old mentor to retire, nor had she chose him to succeed him. turning his golden gaze to the apprentice, he pushed his thoughts aside. they needed to get this lesson on it's way before dusk. "tell me, what can you smell?" the tom meowed, flicking his ears and opening his jaws to see for himself what was lurking in the forest around them. words: 440 tag: wasppaw notes: be nice mr. bossy pants. ;D LAIKA OF ADOXOGRAPHY

sunlight beat down through the gaps in the trees towards thunderclan territory, and wasppaw had never felt more grateful for her short, pale coat. she hardly felt the heat at all as she padded along, trailing after her (most recent) mentor - though some of this perhaps could also be attributed to her enthusiasm. who had time to worry about the sun when there were questions to be asked and new things to be learned? certainly not her! starlingflight was a good mentor, or at least wasppaw expected him to turn out to be, even though she hadn't had a lot of time with him yet. she missed graypatch, surely - but she wouldn't waste any time lamenting over the loss of her former mentor. besides, starlingflight had come to a halt, and as he sat and wrapped his tail around his paws, looking almost expectantly at her, she lengthened her strides to quickly reach his side.
"not every apprentice gets to have two mentors," the black tom cat meowed, seemingly in a good mood. wasppaw blinked pleasantly back at him, nodding even as a surge of energy seemed to travel through her, paws itching suddenly to run. (she ignored this urge, of course.) "nope!" she agreed brightly. "i'm going to miss graypatch, but i'm sure you'll be a great mentor too! i mean, i haven't heard whether you would be but i'm sure you've had an apprentice before, right? you have, haven't you? well - everyone says you're a great warrior, so i bet you'll be the best mentor, too!" everyone also often mentioned starlingflight's moods and bossiness, but naive as wasppaw could be, she at least knew better not to mention that.
a moth fluttered overhead and she glanced upwards at it, watching it for a few heartbeats -- oh! the lesson was beginning. she'd gotten a little off track. "--what can you smell?" starlingflight was asking her, and as she watched him part his jaws, she mirrored the action and drew in the scents around her. "a... squirrel, off that way," she mewed at first, softly, speaking as she deciphered the information she was taking in. "but i think the scent might be a little stale. it might have moved past there..." she flicked her ears, looking up. "there's a wren in... that tree." the apprentice pointed with her nose at a tall oak some foxlengths away, though she knew well enough that the first sign of a cat scurrying up the bark and it would be off. "and... oh!" wasppaw jerked her head back down, seemingly just realizing that one of the scents was not so unattainable at all - a shrew, further along through the trees a bit but altogether not that far. "can i...?" she started to ask quietly, glancing at her mentor - but after only the briefest of pauses, without truly giving him enough time to refuse, she had set off, dropping into a hunter's crouch and beginning her stalk through the undergrowth.
her pawsteps were careful and light - though she didn't weigh all too much anyway - and soon enough she could see the shrew, scrabbling for something - an insect or seed? - in the roots of a tree. well! wasn't he in for a surprise! wasppaw barely suppressed the urge to waggle her haunches in anticipation as she neared her prey - and then, suddenly, she tripped over a jutting stone on the ground. letting out an involuntary squeak in her surprise and pain and floundering for the briefest moment, she could only watch in wide-eyed horror as the shrew bolted upright, clearly hearing her - then, before it could dart away, she put on a burst of speed and dashed towards it.
she caught it as it ran further past the tree, swiping it up and giving it a swift bite to the back of the neck. kill dangling from her jaws, she turned to face where she might expect starlingflight to be, a sheepish, nervous grin already apparent on her muzzle. "heh," she mumbled with a little too much false cheer around the shrew in her jaws. "my bad." this was exactly the sort of thing graypatch had all too often had to scold her for. sometimes she forget to watch where she was going and then... well. at least she'd caught it. but she didn't expect to be let off easy for her clumsiness.

WHEN TOMORROW COMES, the black tom stared at the she cat, semi-wide eyed as she seemed to ramble on and on about her expectations of him. finally, he managed to catch himself and let out a slight, though it was very quiet, purr of amusement. he lifted his tail slightly to hint for her silence. "do you want to scare away all your prey?" he meowed, though his voice was much more amused than stern. though he answered her question with a softer meow. "yes, you are my second. i mentored my younger sister streamsong when she was an apprentice." he nodded his head back in the camps direction as though to expect the pretty, silver she cat to be sitting there. though, he was pretty sure that wasp-paw knew who she was. most of the cats in the clan knew her. she was spunky, young, and full of life. there wasn't a cat in the world that she wouldn't jump up and start a conversation with. the silence wasn't long, as he tasted the scent on the air for himself. the first thing he caught was the wren in the tree, but knew it too far away and picked up the sparrow behind the tree. he waited patiently for the apprentice to pick up something. she mentioned a squirrel and it took the tom a minute to figure out what she had been talking about. but as she corrected the old scent, he had to flick his ear in the approval of her strong senses. he hadn't even picked up the squirrel, only the birds. the tom sat patiently, ears erect on his head as the she cat before him picked up the scents that he had noted moments before. she found the wren, then the sparrow, and before he could even reply to the she cats question, she was lumbering after the bird. with a small sigh, he followed after her, though he stuck to the shadows, where his black fur blended in neatly. it would take the apprentice some work to find him, but he didn't want to spoil her chosen hunt. as wasp-paw padded on, he noted her posture. her crouch was good, her tail leveled and not brushing the ground. her shoulders were squared and neat. there wasn't a thing wrong that he could see. then seemingly out of the blue, the she cat stumbled forward, losing her balance and alerting her prey. starlingflight was not in the mood to let the prey get away, so he started a brief circle around it, but let his apprentice finish the hunt with a swift kill as she found her footing. the first response he got from the young cat was a nervous mumble - something like a chuckle - and then a 'my bad.' for a minute he twitched his ears, just staring down the apprentice with strong, golden eyes. then it seemed to shake off in a matter of moments and he raised his head to meet her gaze. "we are going to have to do some balance work, but i think you were just a bit distracted from the start." his ears twitched. his voice wasn't too stern, just enough to get his point around. "i would only be disappointed if you hadn't caught it." was that a hint of pride in his meow? if it had been it had been brief and quick to falter. "is your paw okay? if so, let's bury that and keep hunting. it's green-leaf we should have at least three pieces of fresh kill before we go back." with that he flicked his tail and continued down the path. words: 606 tag: wasppaw notes: n/a LAIKA OF ADOXOGRAPHY
